CodeAndroid MY first meetup was a blast!

Holla to Android fans from Malaysia!
It turns out that there are quite a number of Android fans in Malaysia after all.

This has been proven with the number of people who attended our CodeAndroid Malaysia's first meetup in FOSS.my (Free and Open Source Software) on 25th October 2009 in UCTI.

Our first meetup was held in conjuction with the annual FOSS Malaysia conference that saw speakers like Richard Stallman, Brian Aker, John Lim and Dr Yusseri.

CodeAndroid Malaysia took this oppurtunity to bring together people who have Android feathers, in the CodeAndroid MY BoF (Birds of a Feather) session.

The event saw close to 50 people consisting of Android geeks (those who had compile Android source code and other hacks), developers, users, students and those who are confident on Android in the growing mobile market or have cool ideas on how Android can benefit mankind.

CodeAndroid BoF was organized by the same people from Google Technology User Group (GTUG) KL who saw a group of people developing the same interest in Android development. Nazrul, Hong and Marvin are the first few members and they invite everyone to join in the fun with Android.

Being the first meetup, CodeAndroid Malaysia had to make an introduction of itself as the first priority.

CodeAndroid is an Android regional community for developers and users now with presence in Singapore, Malaysia and Bangkok.

It is very similar to GTUG, only specific to Android, where CodeAndroid is an independent group of developers and users of Android.
We see CodeAndroid Malaysia as a movement to group Android enthusiasts together, as Android has already become very popular in other countries.

We hope to see and bring up to speed the Android development in Malaysia.

Hongster, aka the Android Geek shared with everyone about Android and its technicality, including how to develop apps or where to find them.

Those who were there was also invited to participate in lightning talks to share their experience and thought about Android. Google Wave invites and freebies were all up for grabs.

There was a special appearance from Hanson Toh, Google's Country Consultant for Malaysia who dropped by and gave more Google freebies. :-)

Marvin, who had just started to use the HTC Hero recently, shared some cool utilities, location-based apps, and games to the audience and did a demo for location-based apps, such as Layar, BuUuk and Google Sky Map. He also highlighted apps created by Malaysian like Doodle Kids and Space War, both created by father and son team (Lim Thye Chean and Lim Ding Wen).

Faisal shared about his company and his idea to develop an Android app for recommendations.

In Malaysia, there are only 2 Android phones in the market which is the HTC Magic and HTC Hero.

CodeAndroid Malaysia had the pleasure of working with HTC and had a HTC Magic unit to pass around for those who have not seen an actual Android device.

Pau, representing HTC, talked about how HTC improved user experience on Android devices by introducing HTC Sense and also various effort in promoting Android.

Wen Jiun, who is a lecturer turned out to be a hidden Android geek, until he attended CodeAndroid BoF and exposed himself!

He has been actively developing using Android SDK and had even participated in the Android Developer Challenge 2 (ADC2). He demonstrated his ADC2 submission and it was not exaggerating that most are awed by it.

Next, Badlisah shared his experience in building (as in compiling) the modified Android source code and loading it to his phone. He had build a HTC Hero ROM and loaded it into his HTC Magic.

Bernie, who is also one who had been actively developing in Android, share his view on why we should not take Android lightly, although technology come and go, Android is here to stay for at least a few years if not more.

Chong, who is from electronic hardware industry background, is interested in Android, and suggested that it's time to make apps that can control devices in our homes remotely.

Everyone who shared during the lightning talks session was given a freebie each which also come with a Google Wave invite.

Nazrul made a wrap up video presentation, displaying videos from developers who had made application that monetizes, such as drivesafe.ly and aHome(theme customization) .
