CodeAndroid Malaysia attended Android Developer Labs World Tour

When CodeAndroid Malaysia got to know about Android Developer Labs World Tour, we were excited and registered ourselves for the event in no time.
Of course, we also notified you with a blogpost and on our Facebook group.

It isn't very often that we get to meet Googlers from US, what more from those who advocate Android, which is our common interest?
CodeAndroid Malaysia is not going to let this oppurtunity slip away.

While Hong and CodeAndroid Singapore people are already in Singapore, 5 of us (Nazrul, Bernie, Wen Jiun, Marvin and Yasir) took the KTM train and bunked the night on the train, waking up in Singapore.

Google Singapore's Office is in 8 Shenton Way on Level 35. We registered ourselves at the lobby and went up to Level 35 enthusiastically.

Most of the team has seen photos of the office but this was the first time the coreteam are physically there, meeting CodeAndroid Singapore team and Android Advocates as well.
Plus many more Android fans!

Presentation

Bill Rutledge (@billyrutledge) started off introducing the Android Development to participants.

Kenneth Lui (@kennethlui) presented an overview of Android applications in Android Market and shared insights about the inner workings of Android Market.

Fred Chung (@fredchung) presented Android SDK Key features.

It was supposed to be a short break before Code Labs, where we were to learn how to make Live Wallpaper on Android 2.1 when Billy asked how many are having the Nexus One.
There are only about 10 persons from the crowd of around 100, so he asked if the owners mind sharing with the rest.
Then all of a sudden, he mentioned about everyone getting a Nexus One each.
There was silence and or maybe disbelief in most of the participants, until the boxes of Nexus One were carted to the front and that was when everyone cheered!

Is this the first time Google giving out phones in Asia? And giving out to everyone in a Google event?

Code Labs

So after the excitement of queuing to get the Nexus One and having a group unboxing of the phone, the real hands-on begins.

Tony Chan (@htchan) then ran the Code Labs where everyone turned on their laptops, booted up their Eclipse IDE, followed a sample code of Live Wallpaper step-by-step, and finally publishing it onto their brand new Nexus One!

For those who did not attend, you can download the sample code here.

We were done by 6pm according to schedule and everyone left with all smiles while some had dinner with the Googlers.

It was a wonderful trip and we look forward to future events from the Android advocates. :-) (Probably to Malaysia? We need more Android developers and fans in Malaysia to make that happen. Join us and follow Code Android Malaysia!)
